MIC Spa x IED Milano
Turning knowledge into hands-on experience
At IED – Istituto Europeo di Design in Milan, an event took place that combined technical expertise, creativity, and direct dialogue with the next generation. Leading the session was Nicola Carletti, Marketing Manager at MIC spa, who guided students from the Fashion Design & Styling and Fashion Communication & Management courses through an immersive journey into the world of yarns.
How well do we really know what lies behind every garment?
This was not just a lecture, but a hands-on experience designed to bring future fashion professionals closer to the most authentic element of any textile product: the material itself.
Through practical examples, students gained insight into how yarns are transformed into fabrics and, ultimately, into finished products capable of telling stories, expressing values, and shaping creative visions.
An immersive lesson focused on yarns, fibers, raw materials, and their applications, with a particular emphasis on GRS, GOTS, and OEKO-TEX® certifications, as well as Chemical Management 4Sustainability protocols.
Starting from the basics, the session explored:
- fiber composition
- the main raw materials used in the textile industry
- the role of yarns in defining performance, aesthetics, and identity of a garment
- applications and uses across different fashion sectors
The moment that made the explanation tangible?
When theory gave way to hands-on experience.
Students had the opportunity to touch yarns and fabrics, understand their structure, and observe how materials behave.
A key step that turned knowledge into perception, making every concept immediate and concrete.
Dialogue, exchange and talent development
The session concluded with an open discussion, where questions, insights and reflections found space for deeper exploration.
To close, one-to-one sessions were held with students to review selected thesis projects, creating a valuable moment of exchange.
MIC and the dialogue with the academic world
This experience represents a concrete example of MIC’s commitment to strengthening its relationship with academia.
The goal is clear:
to build real connections between education and industry, and to contribute to the spread of a more conscious, responsible, and forward-looking textile culture.
